Demand for designer pups through the roof as responsible breeders fail to keep up

RSPCA report reveals buyers are turning to other sources to fulfil their desire for certain breeds of dogs

The root cause of the puppy farming problem is the huge demand for puppies of certain breeds, an RSPCA report has revealed.

The demand for pups - particularly popular ‘designer’ breeds - drastically outweighs the numbers coming to market via legitimate and responsible sources, such as reputable breeders and rescue centres.

The Kennel Club has raised serious concerns after being made aware of Ealing Council's consideration to increase the number of puppies that can be held on the premises of a local pet shop, from 8 to 40.

A man from Hemel Hempstead has been disqualified from keeping dogs for two years after nine tiny poorly puppies were found in the boot of his car.

Simon McDonagh (date of birth 26.05.85) of Three Cherry Trees Traveller Site, appeared at Stevenage Magistrates’ Court yesterday (Thursday 12 March) for sentencing.

How not to buy a puppy

There is currently an advert on a website for a litter of pups. Nothing wrong with that you may say, but this advert is horrifying. The pups are one day old but according to the seller the bitch has no milk and is not interested in her litter, so the pups are "ready now". In other words, those tiny puppies, who have not even the protection of antibodies from their mother's milk, will be hurried off to new homes as quickly as possible, at £300 (around $550) per pup.

Good puppy practice

Dogs will be dogs, mostly

Oh dear, Kevin McKidd has given us another celebrity example of how to get it wrong with dogs. Kevin is the Scottish actor you may have seen in the television series Journeyman, or the films Trainspotting, or Made of Honour. He has two dogs, which he obviously thinks a lot of, as he flew them out to LA with the family when they moved. However, Kevin's dogs are male and female, and he just didn't manage to remember to get them neutered.

Well, you know what happened don't you?
