New Year's resolutions

Exercise should be given in a moderate way so the dog is left feeling content. So when we get back from exercise the dog shouldn't be too exhausted or indeed it shouldn't still be hyper.

Nick Jones is an established dog trainer, a canine behaviour specialist and also provides expert advice in the magazine Dogs Monthly.

At this time of year when we make resolutions to improve our lives in various ways, are there any resolutions we could make to improve life for our dogs? This was the question we put to Nick, and he came up with some thought-provoking answers which are both practical and intruiging.

If you decide to take on one of these resolutions do let us kow how you get on - or if you've decided to make other dog related changes in 2011 tell us about what you're doing.

You can find out more about Nick at his website, and you can contact him via his Twitter feed - ukdogtrainer. Good luck with those resolutions!

Cindy Marabito is the author of Pit Bull Nation which tells of her experiences rescuing Pit Bulls - and many other dogs too.

The book is full of anecdotes illustrating some of the injustices going on in shelters as well as some of the wonderful people who fight for the dogs they care for; some of Cindy's stories are uplifting while some of them are downright shocking.

When Cindy started out volunteering in shelters she was by no means a Pit Bull fan, and it's fascinating hearing her talk about how she got to know the breed and to love them - although she pulls no punches about the true nature of the breed, which just might surprise you.

You can find out more about Cindy and her book at the Pit Bull Nation website and she is also on Facebook. Cindy is still fighting for Pit Bulls and other dogs to have the life they deserve.
