Recovering from pet loss

Don't feel like you need to see yourself as not being able to cope with grief to get some extra help, because it's often a sign of strength rather than weakness to seek assistance.

Karen Litzinger is a licensed professional counsellor with specialised training in pet bereavement counselling and she had produced a CD titled Heal Your Heart Coping With The Loss of a Pet to help dog owners who are mourning a beloved dog.

In this interview Karen has advice on how to deal with the powerful emotions the loss of a dog can evoke, as well as where to find help - and when to find help. The most important thing to remember if you are grieving for a pet is that there is help out there, and there are many people who empathise with your pain and want to help you through it.

You can find out more about Karen at her Heal From Pet Loss website, where she has resources to help those suffering loss.

Newfoundlands

Newfoundlands are big, they're hairy, they're slobbery, they've got to be with you, they're not dogs you can leave outside, they take up all the room in your car, and your home becomes a large dog kennel!

Newfoundlands are gentle loving giant dogs who can find themselves in rescue simply because of their size. The DogCast Radio team went to spend some time with these gorgeous dogs and their big-hearted owners who were taking part in water tests, and commemorating forty years of Newfoundland Club welfare.

In a heart-warming set of interviews, you can hear owners talking about the dogs they love and how those dogs came into their lives. Owning a Newfie is a life-changing experience, and it seems that one is never enough.

You can find out more about Newfoundland welfare at the Newfoundland Club website.

News

In the DogCast Radio News you can hear about Smithy the Labrador who is one of only two dogs in West Midlands Police Force trained to find blood and human remains who made the headlines with his own Twitter account. Plus listen to stories about the Guide Dog who won an award for going above and beyond the call of duty, how dog poop has been put to good use, how dogs are very good for children, and the woman who rescued her dog from a bear attack with a very odd "weapon".

Listener question

We have lots of comments and questions on the site but can you help advise this dog owner as to the best course of action?

"Hey, one quick question.
I have a beagle (about 10months old). It barks when left alone at home. I have school duties so i am not able to be home most of the time. I was thinking of getting another dog so that they will play by themselves when im not around, thus making less noise. but i am wondering whether 2 beagles = less seperation anxiety barking or 2 beagles = double barkings?

Thank you"

So what are your thoughts? - will a second dog calm down the first, or pick up his bad habits? You can reply on the DogCast Radio site, email or phone us, or get in touch via Twitter or Facebook.
