Bulldog breed profile

Training and intelligence
Bulldogs have strong characters and can be stubborn. They are not stupiud, and can learn quickly if you can persuade their is something in it for them. Patience, encouragement and rewards will serve you well when training your Bulldog.

Temperament
The nature of the Bulldog is not what you might expect from that fierce looking face - they are good natured, patient and level headed. They are kind, brave and genlte, but they have a sense of humour, and will not necessarily want to things your way.

Attitude towards strange dogs and people
Despite that feasrome expression, Bulldogs are not aggressive. Careful breeding has meant that today's Bulldog is friendly towards both people and dogs. They do not have guarding instincts, although many people are frightened just by the look of them.

Grooming and shedding
Bulldogs have the advantage of being short coated dogs, so they don't need much grooming. Their short coats do shed a little though.

Exercise
The Bulldog tends to want to be a couch potato, and is happy on a sofa. You must find ways of making exercise fun for him, as he needs it to be healthy.

Need for company
Bulldogs love their families, especially children, and they love to be with them.

General
Do be careful with your Bulldog in very hot weather, as they can overheat. Many Bulldogs have to be born by Caesarian as the bitch's slim hips cannot pass the large heads of her puppies.

I must say.... once you go

I must say.... once you go Bulldog, you can never go back!

Having had a Bulldog who

Having had a Bulldog who lived for twelve years, which is beyond the normal life span, I have just read this profile and will agree with almost everything mentioned, The key points I agree with are that they do need to be encouraged to exercise, Mine didn't carry alot of excess weight, Which I think helped to prolong his life. He was extremely intelligent and learnt quickly as long as their was a tit bit (food as a reward for effort),
The only thing I would question is that I think they do have a guarding instinct, My bulldog was a male and was protective of both my family, my self and it's home. (their is a definate difference between aggressive which he wasn't, and protective and loving which he was), Overall they are an ideal companion

i agree with you, I have a

i agree with you, I have a male victorian bully. he is so sweet and very loving. He is also very protective of me and my children, i have a 6 year old and a 9 month old and he is great with them both. he is still a puppy( only 1 year old) but I def. don't have to encourage him to play, he has a ton of energy. He loves all people and dogs, but he really loves kids. I do think however if you are looking to get a dog especially a bully please, please do your research before getting a bulldog. They are a lot of work but so worth the effort. they are very smart dogs, and are semi- easy to train.(they are pretty stubborn so you will need a lot of patience and love with them) but they need to have their wrinkles cleaned every day. We also have a two year old chocolate lab, that keeps our bully very active. it seems they are much happier when they have a buddy to play with:) Make sure you have a vet with good knowledge of the breed, if a bully gets a cold and its not taken care of properly they can die from it. they are truly the sweetest breed and i hope to have my bully, for many, many years to come:)
